Caregiver Resources

Finding the best care for your family member with dementia can be challenging. Your first step is contacting VIHA's Home and Community Care, whether you are interested in residential care or having a family member attend a community day program. http://www.viha.ca/hcc/

Dementia has been described as a syndrome with a very long goodbye period. The stages through which people with dementia move are often difficult and very stressful and exhausting for their caregivers.

One way of coping as a caregiver is to become familiar with your resources. Nanaimo Travellers Lodge has a Family Council group that can be a good resource starting point.

An excellent community resource is the Alzheimer Society of BC - Central Vancouver Island chapter that offers classes and support groups that are very valuable for their educational opportunities and emotional support. Services offered in Nanaimo include:

  • Caregiver Support group
  • Early Stage support group
  • Family Caregiver Series
  • Shaping the Journey
  • Information and support services
